Season 2012

The Hurley FSR is still closed

May 18

Due to a avalanche on the 12 km from Gold Bridge and lost of snow left on the Pass, The Hurley FSR will not be open for this long weekend and probably no less then one week

May 14

A full crew is working  with the goal to open the Hurley pass for the May long weekend

In this photo of the avalanche slide paths below Green Mountain taken on April 21, 2012 during one of our regular avalanche patrol flights. (See big img in the photo album)

As you can see, a big avalanche blocks the road, and there is still a lot of snow in the alpine starting zones that could still come down- not sure how much this has changed over the past 3 weeks- we did do another flight yesterday, but only to the upper Lillooet, and noticed that a lot more snow has melted.

All the other slide paths along the Hurley Road (near Railroad Pass and Grouty Peak) were fine- this is the only one that may still create an avalanche problem.   So my guess is that they will in fact be able to open the road by the May long weekend- assuming they can afford the snow clearing cost, which will be significant this year.

IRL is planning on opening the road by May long weekend if the avalanche risk permits. There is 285cm at the summit.

Highways staff are trying to assess the avalanche risk this week. I am keeping in touch with Brad Bushill at Highways and will coordinate our works with him. Scott Holden will probably start to brush out the road from 1 km to 12 km soon. We will be discussing with him later this week or early next week.

If you are using the pullout near the “Welcome to the Squamish Forest District ” and the upper bridge, that section of road, we are responsible for.  Provided there is adequate signage well back from the staging area, and you are using traffic control (which you are indicating), I don’t anticipate there to be an issue.  I will update our website with the possible delays to try and get the word out.  Also, I have copied my counterpart in the Cascade District; Ken perhaps you are able to help distribute the message to the community members at your end (sounds like the interruptions will be minimal, more of a courtesy heads up).

Took the Hurley to Bralorne and back last weekend (July 23/24). I drive the Hurley quite often and I thought it was a very rough drive on this occasion. Lots of washboard and exposed rocks especially up the switchbacks. It could really use some maintenance.  The East Hurley FSR was in pretty bad shape too - lots of potholes and exposed rocks. Effective June 07 Hurley is open to public traffic

COMPLAIN about the fact that the Hurley is still not open. There IS a better way – bigger machine, experienced operator and start earlier!  Today the machine broke down.  No official update – no surprise there – they know this is ridiculous.  Debbie Demare

May 30

Got a report on the progress of the plowing Saturday evening. Machine was 500m +/- from the true summit and then they would be on their way downhill. Reliable estimate for completion was 2-3 days which means they should definitely be done by next weekend.

May 26

"The dozer is at approx 34 km - the snow is still around 2 m (7 ft) deep that they are plowing. With the freezing level about 1200 m in the interior today, we're probably still adding to the snow pack.
Road goes to approx 40 km, before getting back into FSR, so I doubt the road will be open by the end of the weekend, unless they break out of the snow soon."

IRL

May 26

"So far today I have spoken with both Ken and Connie from IRL, Rory from Summit Blasting in Lillooet (the company that IRL has contracted to actually do the work), as well as someone from MOTI's office and it seems that the Hurley will not be open for this weekend May 27-29 (second weekend in a row that we have been left hanging, only to find out at the last minute that the road is not yet ready for traffic).  They are currently at the 34km mark - this is absolutely unacceptable, as it the same machine operator doing the work for MOTI this year as last year for MOF, and collectively they all should have known that a D7 is too small a machine for this job.  Additionally, there was word last week that a D8 was being sent up to assist, but this plan was shot down by MOTI (somehow deemed unnecessary?).  Apparently MOTI doesn’t quite understand the urgency that we all have in getting the road opened, and allowing many of the seasonal residents to easily access our properties."

"We received an update from IRL yesterday afternoon.

The dozer is currently working around 33 km (it was at 31 km on Friday – not 39 as originally reported).  The road appears to be  solid – not soft as originally feared.

IRL will be going out again tomorrow, so I hope to have another update by Friday."

May 20

We do not expect the Hurley to be open until after the long weekend. The road has compact snow, slushy and muddy conditions on sections that the dozer has worked on. We ask that you refrain from driving up to see where the work is at as if you are in the area over the weekend to allow the road to have time to dry out.

May 13, 5pm

Good news from the flight today.  The avalanche risk is very low and the snow level is receding.  We expect to have a dozer up there in the next couple of days. Having the road open by the start of next weekend will still be a challenge. We’ll send out another e-mail next Thursday to update where we’re at.

May 13, 2011

Due to the amount of snow and the avalanche conditions the Hurley will not be opened by the May long weekend. Avalanche Technicians are flying the route today (May 13th).  An update  will be sent out early next week.

Hurley Pass is closed for the season!

November 17, 2010 8AM

Snowing. Expect closure!

November 15, 2010 6AM

It was about the same as when we crossed on Thursday, although there has been some new snow at the summit. Still just as drivable with a 4WD, but that will likely end sometime this week with the weather that is coming…Courtesy by: Ashley Slater

November 12, 2010 9:30AM

So we made it across the Hurley yesterday afternoon (Nov 11) with no problems, we didn’t even need to use my chains. About 18” at the top, with a well packed down double track, although very slick. Just advise travellers to not get off to the sides, sides are very soft/fresh powder snow. I will say that any 4WD with winter tires would be just fine at this point. Courtesy by: Ashley Slater

The Hurley is in bad condition and needs a maintenance

July 16, 2010 08:50AM

Drove from Pemberton to Gold Bridge Thursday June 16-th. The road could really some maintenance - constant washboard and exposed rock from the beginning to the pass. Middle OK but also beaten up. Coming down to Gold Bridge OK. Low clearance vehicles will do fine, but it's slow going. Get some weight on the drive axle! Submitted By: Tom Kartmazov

July 01, 2010 10:20PM

The Hurley Road is rough on the Pemberton side, smooth in the middle and washboarded on the way down to Gold Bridge.

June 22, 2010 9:20PM

Grading is in progress. Road conditions are poor.

June 11, 2010 6:00PM

The Hurley from the Pemberton side is very bumpy. On the Pass the snow is melting fast. The road is still wet on some spot and the traffic contributed to rutting of the road surface. There is 2 big potholes just after the Pass..After the 24 km mark the road as been graded up to the Gun lake intersection
Low clearance vehicle could face some difficulties...

Hurley FSR: Opening Date

June 3, 2010 8:00AM

"The Hurley has been graded to around 32 km. We’re waiting for the rest of the road to dry out before we finish off to the pass. It will probably be a couple of weeks before it is ready."

/Ken Conway-Brown MOF/

You can leave your comments regarding the hurley road here

May 28, 2010 8:00AM

"Received a call from Garrett last night (25th), Grading is going well (rain has helped with base) . I suspect Howie will be up to about 22-23km today. They are taking the weekend off. Will head back up for couple days next week. Grading should be complete up to about 32km by wed next week.

The pass will not be graded for a couple of weeks. I expect end of June before snow is gone. Road through pass is single lane and rough.
Speed still seems to be an issue with traffic on the Hurley and regard for maintenance crews."

May 24, 2010 10:00AM

Took the Hurley back to Pemberton on morning of May 24th. The lane cleared through the snow was in good shape, road was dry and not grooved yet. Rest of road is still very bumpy. I think that snow will be around until late July at least. Submitted By: DaveC

May 23, 2010 1:00PM

Snow has been removed and 1 lane with few pullouts are established. 4 WD is highly recommended. With traffic the road will deteriorate.

May 21, 2010 9:00AM

"The Hurley will not be open for traffic today. I expect that we will have it open by the end of the weekend but conditions are poor. The road has not had time to dry out and traffic that has travelled on the portion of the road near the pass that has been opened have contributed to rutting of the road surface. I would recommend using alternate routes for those travelling back to Vancouver on Monday."

/Ken Conway-Brown MOF/

May 20, 2010 9:23PM

Road is expected to be opened on May 22 or May 23, 2010. Traffic is not recommended even for 4WD due to the wet surface condition. Grading work will start on May 25, 2010.

/Ken Conway-Brown MOF/

May 20, 2010 7.00AM

"The road will probably only be accessible to 4 wheel drive traffic once it is open. There are very few pullouts at this time so if we get it open on Friday it would be great to keep the Pemberton bound traffic to a minimum for the start of the weekend. Once we have the single lane open we will clear some turnouts through the pass."

/Ken Conway-Brown MOF/ Engineering Officer Cascades Forest District

May 19, 2010 6.00PM.

Road is not graded, up to the snow level , crew is working on establishing one lane through the pass. So far the condition of this existing lane is very muddy full of potholes and tire grooves and would not be suitable with a 2WD .

"Bridge River Valley Evacuation: Hurley Forest Service Road

The Hurley Forest Service road was identified as an Emergency Evacuation rout for the Bridge River Valley, ad the Minestry of Forest and Range will be requested to open the road by May 15th of each year.

Contact: P. Edgington, CAO"

/ April 26-10 SLRD Board meeting /

"The Hurley River FSR is maintained to a Level I Standard which means the road will normally accommodate 2-wheel drive vehicles. The Ministry of Forests & Range receives funding from the Ministry of Highways & Infrastructure to maintain the road.

Our avalanche assessment flight was delayed and is now planned for early next week (May 3-7). If we get the go ahead we have a contract in place to start the works."

Request Letter to SLRD Representative Area A Minimize

April 14, 2010 8:11 AM

Subject:        BRV Evacuation Route: Hurley FSR opening date 2010

Hello Russ,

The fire season is slowly approaching again. The snow around the BRV is slowly melting away and soon the ground cover will start to dry out as summer approaches.

I am requesting that you, as our SLRD representative, request the SLRD to formally identify to the Forest Service that the Hurley FSR is a designated SLRD evacuation route for the BRV, and that it must be cleared no later than May 15th each year. The issue is saving lives not money.

During the Tyaughton fire last year, the Hurley FSR was declared the evacuation route by the SLRD for Gun Lake residents. The Hurley FSR is usually cleared of snow by the May long week-end, but I have known it to be as late as July before it is ploughed. I believe it is joint responsibility between the Cascades Forest District and the Squamish District for ploughing the road in the spring and summer maintenance.

The Forest Service excuses for not clearing the road early are twofold: snow depth on Railroad Pass and avalanche danger. While this may be true, the road can always be cleared with a D8 Cat and there are procedures for dealing with the avalanche danger that we see employed regularly on the Duffy Lake Rd, at Whistler Mountain, at Rogers Pass, etc.

Maintenance of the Hurley FSR is also an issue when road 40 is closed due to mud and rock slides. Again, the alternate route out of the BRV is the Hurley FSR.

I have discussed the question of a formal fire season start date with the Kamloops Fire Centre. Their approach now is that it is a potential fire season all year round and that there are many region-dependent variables preventing defining a set date; hence, my suggestion of establishing May 15th for the BRV as the critical date.

Leaving the date undefined provides too much leeway for the Forest Service not to act in the best interests for the safety of the BRV communities.

Regards

Chris Donald
