If you are using the pullout near the “Welcome to the Squamish Forest District ” and the upper bridge, that section of road, we are responsible for. Provided there is adequate signage well back from the staging area, and you are using traffic control (which you are indicating), I don’t anticipate there to be an issue. I will update our website with the possible delays to try and get the word out. Also, I have copied my counterpart in the Cascade District; Ken perhaps you are able to help distribute the message to the community members at your end (sounds like the interruptions will be minimal, more of a courtesy heads up).
Thanks,

Took the Hurley to Bralorne and back last weekend (July 23/24). I drive the Hurley quite often and I thought it was a very rough drive on this occasion. Lots of washboard and exposed rocks especially up the switchbacks. It could really use some maintenance. The East Hurley FSR was in pretty bad shape too - lots of potholes and exposed rocks. COMPLAIN about the fact that the Hurley is still not open. There IS a better way – bigger machine, experienced operator and start earlier! Today the machine broke down. No official update – no surprise there – they know this is ridiculous. Debbie Demare

Got a report on the progress of the plowing Saturday evening. Machine was 500m +/- from the true summit and then they would be on their way downhill. Reliable estimate for completion was 2-3 days which means they should definitely be done by next weekend.

"The dozer is at approx 34 km - the snow is still around 2 m (7 ft) deep that they are plowing. With the freezing level about 1200 m in the interior today, we're probably still adding to the snow pack.
Road goes to approx 40 km, before getting back into FSR, so I doubt the road will be open by the end of the weekend, unless they break out of the snow soon."

"So far today I have spoken with both Ken and Connie from IRL, Rory from Summit Blasting in Lillooet (the company that IRL has contracted to actually do the work), as well as someone from MOTI's office and it seems that the Hurley will not be open for this weekend May 27-29 (second weekend in a row that we have been left hanging, only to find out at the last minute that the road is not yet ready for traffic). They are currently at the 34km mark - this is absolutely unacceptable, as it the same machine operator doing the work for MOTI this year as last year for MOF, and collectively they all should have known that a D7 is too small a machine for this job. Additionally, there was word last week that a D8 was being sent up to assist, but this plan was shot down by MOTI (somehow deemed unnecessary?). Apparently MOTI doesn’t quite understand the urgency that we all have in getting the road opened, and allowing many of the seasonal residents to easily access our properties."

"We received an update from IRL yesterday afternoon.
The dozer is currently working around 33 km (it was at 31 km on Friday – not 39 as originally reported). The road appears to be solid – not soft as originally feared.
IRL will be going out again tomorrow, so I hope to have another update by Friday."

We do not expect the Hurley to be open until after the long weekend. The road has compact snow, slushy and muddy conditions on sections that the dozer has worked on. We ask that you refrain from driving up to see where the work is at as if you are in the area over the weekend to allow the road to have time to dry out.

Good news from the flight today. The avalanche risk is very low and the snow level is receding. We expect to have a dozer up there in the next couple of days. Having the road open by the start of next weekend will still be a challenge. We’ll send out another e-mail next Thursday to update where we’re at.

Due to the amount of snow and the avalanche conditions the Hurley will not be opened by the May long weekend. Avalanche Technicians are flying the route today (May 13th). An update will be sent out early next week.
