Welcome to the Lil'wat Nation Minimize

Welcome to our Land

The Lil’wat Traditional Territory is a beautiful land of striking mountains and glaciers, fertile valleys, alpine meadows, and cold clean streams and lakes.

Salish First Nations people were the first to call this area their home when they settled at the foot of majestic Mount Currie and the head of Lillooet Lake. This is the traditional territory of the Lil'wat Nation, who today are headquartered in Mount Currie and D'Arcy, with smaller communities sprinkled along Lillooet Lake. From the time of their first contact with Europeans, the Lil'wat have always been characterized by their friendliness towards visitors.

Lil'wat Nation - a branch of the Interior Salish. They were also called 'Onion People', named for the region's abundance of wild onions and evidence of their existence here dates back more than 2,000 years in the form of pictographs (rock paintings), a Lil'wat tradition that still influences much of their art today.

The territory extends south to Rubble Creek, north to just below Anderson Lakes, east to the Upper Stein Valley and west to the coastal inlets of the Pacific Ocean. In total, the traditional lands that the Lil’wat have lived on since time out of mind are approximately 780,000 hectares. The current day community of Mount Currie is the heart of the Lil’wat Nation territory. The Creator has blessed our home.
